Hard work and creativity paid off for students, teachers, and supporters of Harmony Middle School in Hamilton,VA, who raised $2,600 for the Western Loudoun Food Pantry.

Starting in October, students at Harmony Middle School began working with local ceramic artists on the Empty Bowl Project.  More than 350 bowls were made by the middle school students. Through the activity, the students also learned about hunger, food security, and ways to get involved in global issues on a local level. The Empty Bowl Project  is an international grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger. It brings together community groups and schools to do something creative, making ceramic bowls which are auctioned off, and then donating the proceeds to local food pantries.

The project was completed after a dinner and auction in December and the check was delivered to the pantry on January 24th.

For bringing together art and community service, our January Ampersand award goes to Harmony Middle School. Congratulations!
